Canada’s record holder in the 3,000m steeplechase is going to be running the finals on Wednesday morning in Rio.

Hughes, with a PB of 8:11.64, was the fastest Canadian heading into the race. That mark is also the Canadian record.

Hughes was placed in the first heat and ran a strong race sticking with the front pack. On the bell lap, he moved up to temporarily take the lead, staying in front of the pack momentarily before sliding back. When they neared the last bend, he had slid back to fourth place, where he stayed. He finished fourth in his heat. The top three advanced automatically, so Hughes had to wait nervously to see if his 8:26.27 was good enough to move on. The automatic qualifiers in his heat were the American Hillary Bor, Soufiane Elbakkali or Morocco and Kenya’s Ezekiel Kemboi, the reigning Olympic champ.

There were two other Canadians in the event: Guelph, Ont.’s Taylor Milne and Chris Winter of Vancouver. Winter ran in a strong second heat with American Evan Jager, who is a medal hopeful for the event. Winter hung in in the middle of the pack for the majority of the race. By the bell lap, it did not look hopeful for him to move on. He finished 10th in the heat with Evan Jager of the U.S., Kipruto of Kenya and Mekhissi of France automatically qualifying.

Milne ran the third heat, which was won by Kenya’s Conseslus Kipruto, a medal favourite. The Canadian won’t be advancing, finishing towards the back of the pack in 8:34 of the fastest heat, with a 8:21 winning time.

The finals are set to go ahead on Aug. 17 at 10:50 a.m.
