Nicole Sifuentes moves on to 1,500m semis, 100m women do not advance

Canadian Nicole Sifuentes qualified for the women's 1,500m semifinals on Friday night at the Rio Olympics, the only Canadian to do so.

Nicole Sifuentes

The evening session wrapped up day one at the Rio Olympics on Friday with a Canadian advancing in the women’s 1,500m and both 100m sprinters being eliminated in the women’s 100m.

Women’s 1,500m

Canadian Nicole Sifuentes advanced to the women’s 1,500m semifinals on Friday night at the Rio Olympics. Sifuentes, 30, qualified based on time after finishing seventh in the third and final heat. The two other Canadians, Gabriela Stafford and Hilary Stellingwerff, did not advance.

Athletes needed to finish in the top six of their respective heats (races) to automatically qualify for the semifinals. The women’s 1,500m has three rounds: preliminaries, semifinals and finals. Sifuentes was one of the fastest non-automatic qualifiers meaning she got a spot in the semifinals, set for Aug. 14.

Sifuentes finished in 4:07.43. Stafford, who is just 20 years of age, finished in ninth in heat two in 4:09.45. Stellingwerff was seventh in heat one in 4:12 finishing just one spot out of an automatic qualifying position. Athletes in the latter heats generally have an advantage because they can see how fast they need to run to qualify based on time.

Sifuentes is the Pan Am Games silver medallist in the women’s 1,500m. Stafford and Stellingwerff did not qualify in any other event and will not race again at the Olympics.
