Canadian sprinter Hyacinthe left off Rio team due to injury

Athletics Canada announced today that 200m and 4x100m relay sprinter Kimberly Hyacinthe would not make the trip to Rio due to a leg injury incurred at a recent track meet.

Kimberly Hyacinthe from Terrebonne, Que. had qualified for the Games by both meeting the Olympic standard (of 23.20 seconds) as well as placing at the Canadian trials in Edmonton in late June. There she finished second in a time of 22.88.

Mere weeks before the Olympics began, she seemed to have injured herself and was unable to finish a London Diamond League race in late July.

Athletics Canada confirmed a leg injury shortly after and noted that Hyaconthe received immediate medical treatment in hopes of rehabilitating the injury before her scheduled departure for Rio.

However Wednesday in Toronto, Hyacinthe was unable to complete a fitness assessment and was thus withdrawn from the team. Athletics Canada’s rules clearly state that an athlete can be left off a team if they are injured and unable to compete.

The women’s 200m heats are scheduled to start on Monday morning and would have been Hyacinthe’s first event. She was also slated to take part in the 4x100m relay which kicks off next week Thursday.
