Canadians couldn’t be prouder of Melissa Bishop after fourth-place finish

Canadian Melissa Bishop set a new national record in the women's 800m on Saturday at the Rio Olympics and her fans couldn't be prouder.

Melissa Bishop

Canadians couldn’t be prouder of Melissa Bishop’s fourth-place run at the Olympics on Saturday. The 28-year-old ran a new Canadian record of 1:57.02 and narrowly missed the podium. Not only did she impress with her lightning-fast run, she helped inspire the next generation of runners.

Bishop matched the best-ever finish by a Canadian at the Olympics in the women’s 800m. With fans watching from across Canada including her small hometown of Eganville, Ont., she pulled through with a very strong performance.

The Canadian won the silver medal at the 2015 world championships. She is coached by Dennis Fairall, who is on long-term medical leave from his position at the University of Windsor. Bishop dedicated her run to the longtime coach and mentor.

Though she was visibly disappointed with just narrowly missing the podium, as can be seen below in her post-race interview, Canadians were quick to send her messages on Twitter.
