Chatting with Olympian Melissa Bishop
Melissa Bishop has just recently set the Canadian women's 800m record (again!) and is one of our best hopes at a medal in track and field. Here's what she has to say about her trip to the Rio Olympics this summer:
This interview appeared in our July/August issue.
Event: 800, Canadian record holder: 1:57:43
Who is your all-time favourite Canadian Olympian?
Mark Tewksbury. He was our Chef de Mission in 2012 and I remember his speech pre-opening ceremonies to all of us Olympians; so motivating, inspiring and real. It still gives me goosebumps to think about it. Since then, we’ve crossed paths a few times and he’s an energy filled, positive role model.
What do you think the hardest event is at the Games?
I think multi-events in athletics are the toughest. Hence, they are considered the greatest athletes in the world. Having to do 8–10 events in two days at such a high level? I couldn’t imagine it.
What are you most excited for in Rio (can be anything at all)?
Competing. Running with the maple leaf and “CANADA” written across my chest. It’s such a honour to represent your country at the Olympic Games.
What non-Olympic thing will you be sure to do while visiting Brazil?
Be a tourist for a day.
Did you try to prepare for the heat and humidity in your training?
Of course. These are factors that must be dealt with. Luckily, I train in southern Ontario and the climate in the summer is very similar to that of Rio at that time of year, hot and humid as heck. Hair frizz 24/7!
Did you know?
Bishop is still with her coach, Dennis Fairall, who will be with her at the Games.
