How to stream the Olympic Games when you don’t have a cable subscription

The biggest event for running fans in four years begins tonight with the opening ceremony of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Athletes will march into the Olympic stadium tonight and CBC’s coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. EDT with the countdown. The ceremony begins at 7:00 p.m. EDT.

The Brazil Games take place in the GMT-3 time zone, which is one hour ahead of those watching in Ontario, Quebec, parts of Nunavut and on the east coast of the United States. The Olympics will be streamed live, for free, courtesy of CBC. Only viewers in Canada will be able to watch CBC’s coverage as other countries have exclusive rights for the Games.

Mobile users can watch the action live on the CBC App for Rio 2016 or online at CBC Olympics. Those with cable can watch the events live on CBC as well as partner channels including TSN, TSN2, Sportsnet and Sportsnet ONE.

CBC will broadcast daily from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. EDT starting on August 6, the first full day of competition. Track action begins on Aug. 12, highlighted by the women’s 10,000m final. Canadians Natasha Wodak and Lanni Marchant will contest the 25-lap race.

If you’re curious as to when an athlete is competing, simply type their name into Google and a new feature will outline when they’re running and in what event.

All content streamed live will also be available for viewing on-demand once the day’s action concludes.
