The Rio Olympics concluded on Sunday with the closing ceremony and the organizers previewed the 2020 Tokyo Games with an incredible show.
With the Rio Olympics now concluded and the torch being passed to Tokyo, running fans have a lot to look forward to in 2020. And if the Olympic teaser is any sort of indication, Tokyo 2020 will be the greatest Olympics the world has ever seen.
The Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe became Mario for his entrance at the closing ceremony at the Rio Olympics. At the end of each Olympics, the next host country puts on a show which previews hosting in four years time.

Mario, Pac-Man and Anime characters were all featured in the teaser. Mario is a fictional character, part of the Mario series, created by Japan-based Nintendo. The teaser is based on its culture with its video game industry being a big part of Japan.

Japan is notoriously a running-obsessed country both on the elite level and among the non-running fans. Japanese packs the streets for local marathons. The nation also consistently puts up some great performances at the Olympics. In Rio, one of the best runs was from the Japanese 4x100m relay team that set an Asian record to win a silver medal.

The world’s largest amateur marathon market? Japan. There were more finishers at marathons with at least 1,000 participants in Japan than any other country in the world including the United States, the previous leader in that category.

The only problem with the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo is that we will have to wait three years and 11 months for the next Games to begin.
