Affordable fall accessories under $30

Fall races are creeping up and you may be thinking about picking up some stuff to help you along with your training. We’ve put together a short list of items under $30 to help you get back training for that upcoming 5K.

New Running Gear - Wrightsock Stride Low and Fuel Low Running Socks

Socks $10-$30

You can never have too many pairs of socks. Some people like thin socks and some are looking for more cushioning. Figure out what your favourite brand is and buy a few pairs of them. They are a relatively cheap addition to your wardrobe and can be an big upgrade from your standard cotton socks.

Running Supplements - Gu, roctane Enery GelGels and fuelling options $1-$3

If you’re going to use gels or other fuelling products during races, training how to plan to race is the best approach. You don’t want to get to the start line having never tested to make sure a certain product actually works for you. Don’t leave this to second-hand information from a friend. What is good for others may not be best for you.

Each gel will cost about $2, and you likely don’t need as many as you think if you’re eating properly before and after your runs. Buy and few different options and test them on long runs.

rec_bottles_podium_big_chill_25oz_azure_s14_52317_s14_v1Water bottle $15-$30

Buy yourself a good water bottle to take with you everywhere. For most races and training you don’t need something to carry with you while actually running, but a sturdy bottle to lug around the city with you is essential to keeping hydrated. Having a bottle of water on your desk at work is the best way to make sure you’re keeping hydrated. It’s simple and a good water bottle will last you a long time.

Look into trusted brands like CamelBak, who may be known for their hydration packs but also make great bottles.

Headlamp – $30+

With the days getting shorter, you’ll soon find yourself running well before sunrise or after sunset. On major streets this isn’t a big problem but if you like to run on paths or in parks you will find it too dark to do so without some light. A good headlamp will keep your path bright and runnable much later into the fall and winter.

A really top quality headlamp will run you upwards of $50, but Petzl and Black Diamond have a few entry-level ones that come in right around $30. For most of your running needs, these should be enough, but if you’re doing long trail runs, spending the extra money on a brighter, more durable lamp may be worth the money.

buffBuff – $24

The multifunctional headgear is a one of the most versatile pieces of clothing you can pick up for under $30. Few items, at any price, can be used in so many types of weather. They make a great running scarf in the winter and can be worn around your head as a headband during the scorching summer heat. When not in use, they fit easily around your wrist and can be packed away into almost any pocket.

The product is seamless and surprisingly durable. Even after seasons of use, they always come back to their original size and shape without losing elasticity.
