A new collaboration between Adidas and Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe, the German capital’s primary transit operator, means a line of sneakers double as transit passes.

The BVG x adidas EQT Support 93/Berlin, a limited edition shoe with 500 available for sale as of Tuesday, has a transit pass sewn into the tongue. The EQT Support 93/Berlin retails for $270, considerably less than the annual BVG pass, which retails for $1,110. (The shoe’s pass can be used until Dec. 31, 2018.) Berlin transit relies on the honour system where instead of turnstiles, authorities check fares while on route at random.

The shoe doesn’t hold a chip or groundbreaking new technology. Instead, a pass is simply attached to the tongue of the shoe, which is designed with Berlin colours including a patch of subway-themed material and BVG yellow laces. BVG operates the popular U-Bahn train, buses and tram system in Berlin but not the S-Bahn.

Shoe availability was on first come, first served basis at Overkill Shop in Berlin. The shop’s website shows the BVG x adidas EQT Support 93/Berlin as sold out as of Jan. 18.
