Our 2014 running pack review

With their sleek, body-hugging profiles, generous fluid carrying capacity and extra storage for a wind shell and energy bars, running or hydration pack should be mandatory gear for longer trail runs.

Here are some of this season’s best hydration packs.

arcteryx

Arc’teryx Aerios 7 $100

Built with a highly breathable back panel and shoulder straps, the Aerios 7 offers runners a comfortable way to carry a hydration bladder and other essentials when trail running. The sleek pack body has two low-profile stretch-fabric pockets as well as an internal zippered pocket for organizing small items. Arc’teryx employs a unique back panel construction that ensures the pack remains flexible vertically, but avoids the lateral flex that turns many small packs into unstable sausage-like shapes when fully loaded. An adjustable sternum strap and a two-level adjustable and removable waist belt create a comfortable carry for this versatile pack.

northface

The North Face Enduro Plus Pack $160

By using a unique Boa closure, the Enduro Plus pack allows runners to compress the water bladder (and reduce sloshing) by simply turning an external knob. The North Face also includes multiple pockets on the pack and waist belt, which provide plenty of space for a jacket, food and other small essentials. Two external compression straps help stabilize the load, while the highly breathable shoulder straps deliver a comfortable carry regardless of the load.

nathan hydration pack Nathan Firecatcher $100

More of a hydration vest than a pack, the Firecatcher is a great choice for runners seeking a minimalist carrying system. The stretchy rear pocket will accommodate a hydration bladder (not included) or a lightweight shell jacket. On the shoulder straps, Nathan provides two pockets that hold 300 ml water flasks. A zippered pocket on the left shoulder can accommodate a couple of energy gels, while a small pocket on the right shoulder holds electrolyte tabs or a micro mp3 player. A highly ventilated and adjustable harness ensures a comfortable carry even in hot and humid conditions.

camelback hydration packCamelbak Marathon $120

The Marathon is snug fitting and very comfortable for longer runs. It packs in an ample two-litre reservoir. Although this unit is more of a vest than a pack, the stretchy main pocket is big enough for stashing a lightweight jacket. The shoulder straps each have two multi-purpose pockets, with one big enough to hold a large flask. The two smaller Velcro pockets are ideal for energy gels but are deep enough for a smartphone or wallet. Our testers found that the unit breathed well and fit close to the body, but did not chafe.

osprey hydration packOsprey Rev 12 $130

With its massive main compartment and multiple pockets, the Osprey Rev 12 is a great choice for trail runners who need to bring extra clothing on their runs. The main pocket houses a massive 2.5 l hydration bladder and still offers room for a light shell. Multiple external pockets add even more carrying capacity and ensure that all items are organized and accessible. Osprey also includes a touchscreen compatible smart phone case on the shoulder strap for runners that may need to stay connected during their runs. Finally, a well-ventilated body-hugging harness and waist belt deliver a comfortable and secure carry.

nathan hydration pack

Nathan VaporCloud $220

This full-featured and well-ventilated hydration pack provides a surprising amount of storage and versatility without feeling heavy or cumbersome. Multiple pockets (on the back, waist belt and shoulder strap) provide storage for clothing, food, a hydration bladder and other small necessities. On the bottom of the shoulder straps are two hydration flask pockets perfectly sized for small water bottles, thin gloves or a light hat. Nathan also includes a unique ice pack sleeve in the back panel, which will no doubt be welcomed by warm-weather trail runners. A dual chest-strap closure and various compression straps work together ensuring a stable and comfortable carry.

salomonSalomon ADV Skin S-Lab Hydro 5 $160

At 250 g, the Salomon adv Skin S-Lab Hydro 5 pack/vest is incredibly light and yet offers a shocking level of storage and versatility. Multiple easily accessed stretch-fabric pockets ensure that runners can carry more than just the minimum amount of gear. For hydration, Salomon provides an insulated bladder sleeve (bladder not included) as well as two 500 ml soft flasks. Other nice features include a pocket with a small emergency space blanket, highly breathable construction and soft, slightly stretchy materials throughout. A dual chest-strap closure and three size options create a secure, snug and comfortable fit. This is an excellent vest for racing or fast training.
