The upper

This shoe has an engineered knit upper that provides maximum comfort and support. The knit construction is lightweight and breathable and takes inspiration from the protective armour of the samurai. If the runner is looking for more of a locked-in feel they can use the eyelet lacing system to stretch out the midfoot and provide more security at the heel.

The midsole and outsole

Unlike previous models of the Kinsei, the FlyteFoam BLAST midsole contains FlyteFoam BLAST PLUS (Asics’ softest and most durable cushioning to date), making a super light and responsive shoe with smoother landings and transitions. What distinguishes this model is the PEBAX propulsion plate built into the midsole to help redirect the runner’s energy forward and create the feeling of speed.

Another change from the original Gel-Kinsei is the new outsole design. The engineered rubberized outsole is strategically placed over high contact areas to improve durability over all terrain.

The verdict

After wearing these shoes on various terrain and training days, the Gel-Kinsei Blast would be ideal for those looking for a high-cushioned responsive shoe for easy runs and long runs. The PEBAX plate gives it a snappy feel for casual pickups here and there. For speed demons, there are other Asics models that are lighter and grippier, such as the ASICS Magic Speed or Metaspeed Sky, but this shoe fulfils its purpose well, which is to provide casual runners with a comfortable and breathable fit and a smooth ride for easy days.
