The Wave Rebellion Pro, Mizuno’s first ever super shoe, is one of the most exciting new additions to the market. Featuring unique geometry, durable yet lightweight materials and ample dual-density foam, this plated shoe is a high performance machine. The Wave Rebellion Pro was inspired by track spikes but designed for the marathon. The result is an energetic ride that is fast and fun.

The upper

The no-nonsense upper offers a snug, sock-like fit. Made of 90 per cent recycled material, it is thin, highly breathable and soft. Mizuno kept the materials to a minimum to reduce the weight of this shoe, but their attention to comfort is appreciated. The thin tongue is contrasted by a padded ankle collar, and the lacing system and slight heel counter create an excellent lockdown. The low-volume toe box may be too narrow for some runners, but I like racing shoes to fit snugly. The Wave Rebellion Pro is available in multiple colours; the black/white featured here is inspired by the Japanese tradition of writing a New Year’s resolution in calligraphy.

The midsole

The eye-catching geometry of the Wave Rebellion Pro is designed for optimal propulsion. The extreme heel bevel, midfoot cut-out, and forefoot rocker provide incredible energy return. Dubbed “Smooth Speed Assist (SSA)”, this system encourages mid-foot landing and quick toe off, and prevents any rollback. The deep channel cut-out creates additional stiffness where you want it most, making this shoe far more stable than it looks. The dual-density midsole foam is highly cushioned, yet responsive. Soft Enerzy lite + foam close to the foot provides a plush landing, while a layer of firm Enerzy lite foam closer to the ground makes for a poppy push-off. These layers sandwich a carbon-infused nylon plate, meant to be as light as possible without sacrificing stability.

The outsole

Unlike many other super shoes that scale back their outsole to reduce weight, the Wave Rebellion Pro’s G3 outsole provides excellent traction. The grippy resin runs the length of the shoe, and holds up very well even on damp surfaces. I found it difficult to take sharp corners in this shoe, thanks to the high stack height and narrow last. But this is my only complaint, and overall I felt very secure changing paces and terrains in the Wave Rebellion Pro.

The verdict

The Mizuno Wave Rebellion Pro looks intimidating and felt bizarre initially. But once I got up to tempo pace, it was one of the best rides I’ve ever experienced. It is far more stable, cushioned and flexible underfoot than I anticipated, and kept me feeling fresh and fast throughout long training sessions. Heel strikers or those with wide feet may find this shoe awkward, but it is an exciting option for those looking to achieve their BQ or smash their half-marathon PB!
