SHOE REVIEW: Under Armour Flow Synchronicity

The UA Flow Synchronicity was designed to help women run even faster

The Under Armour Flow Synchronicity is the company’s first shoe made by women, for women. This lightweight, responsive trainer takes you from a mid-week 5K to the gym, providing the perfect balance of comfort and pep.

Athletic footwear has traditionally been designed for men, then simply made smaller for women. However, this doesn’t address the specific needs of women’s feet and bodies. Under Armour’s all-female design team started with hundreds of 3D foot scans, studies of biomechanics, and feedback from prototype testers to create a women-specific last, or mold. They narrowed in on 2 key ways that a woman’s foot differs from a man’s: in the heel and the arch.

The Upper

The micro knit upper is breathable and stretchy with minimal overlays or seams. It is designed to hug your foot, avoiding hot spots or rubbing, and is great for logging miles in the warmer months. The plush sockliner cradles the foot and the narrow, padded collar cups women’s ankles while preventing blisters. Although this a neutral shoe, the Flow Synchronicity offers additional arch support that I noticed – and appreciated – as soon as I stepped in.

The Midsole

When designing a light, quick shoe, keeping materials to a minimum is the name of the game. The Synchronicity boasts a one-piece Flow midsole, Under Armour’s lightest foam technology. It offers a smooth and comfortable ride, allowing for easy changes of pace. This is not the most cushioned trainer on the market, and is therefore ideal for easy runs of up to 10K and for short tempos.

Finally, the Flow Synchronicity has a Bluetooth chip embedded in the midsole that syncs to the MapMyRun app. This allows you to track your runs, and offers personalized form coaching.

The Outsole – There isn’t one

Like the UA Flow Velocity Wind, the Synchronicity does not have a separate rubber outsole. Instead, the unique, one-piece Flow foam has a grippy bottom with enough traction for wet and dry surfaces. The lack of a traditional outsole reduces weight, and the rounded geometry allows for smooth transitions. This is a responsive shoe made for the roads, so I would hesitate to take it on very rough terrain.

The Verdict

Designed specifically with women in mind, The Under Armour Flow Synchronicity is a revolutionary addition to the brand’s line. Minimalist, comfortable and firm under foot, this shoe is a great option for light speed work and easy summer runs.
