First look: Hoka One One Tracer 2

A quick look at the Hoka One One Tracer 2, the brand's lightest road shoe and popular racing flat, which can be used 5K up to the marathon

Unlike most Hoka One One shoes, the brand’s signature racing flat has a less maximalist look.

The Tracer 2, Hoka One One’s lightest road shoe, hit shelves on July 15. The new Tracer features the same drop, at 4 mm, as the original Tracer, with the only difference between the men’s and women’s shoe being a 1 mm higher stack on the men’s heel.

The big change in the Tracer 2, which retails for $169.99, is in the upper. A lighter engineered mesh replaces the upper of the original Tracer and boasts a snug fit throughout the midfoot, toe box and heel. With a sock-like fit, the Tracer 2 fits about true-to-size, if not slightly small.

The men’s shoe weighs 217 g (7.6 oz.) and the women’s is 190 g (6.7 oz.), shockingly light for the amount of protection, and underfoot thickness, the shoe offers. The colour featured in this first look story is the men’s line.

One functional addition is the small strap at the heel to help with putting on, and taking off, the shoe. The well-received responsive cushioning of the Tracer continues from its first iteration through to the Tracer 2. With plenty of cushioning for a racing flat, the Tracer 2 can be used for longer road workouts, road races, from short to long, and even non-technical trail running.

The Hoka One One Tracer 2 is a solid option for a runner looking for a super lightweight and neutral trainer or a runner who’s in the market for a long-lasting racing flat.
