What’s new in the Saucony Hurricane ISO 3

Weather all storms with the new Saucony Hurricane ISO 3.

For the runner looking for some serious foot protection, the Hurricane ISO 3 is about as stable as footwear gets. The third iteration of the Hurricane ISO – it’s still a relatively new shoe to the lineup versus the Kinvara, for example – is for runners with moderate to severe pronation.

To deal with pronation – the rolling of the ankle inwards – the Hurricane ISO 3 has a stiff heel to keep the foot locked down and firm cushioning, especially on the inside to protect from excessive inward rolling, through the midfoot. Starting with a thicker heel, at 30 mm, the Hurricane ISO 3 features an 8 mm drop to the forefoot. The shoe would be on the maximalist side of the cushioning scale. That stated, the Hurricane is 9.7-10.9 oz. for women and men, respectively, so it’s meant as an everyday shoe for mid- to longer runs.

For the most part, the Hurricane ISO 2 and its successor, the ISO 3, are quite similar with only minor updates. The outer’s mesh is thinner on the ISO 3 and the caging layering around the midfoot has been reduced.

The Hurricane features a wide and durable landing area – Saucony refers to it as Tri-Flex – on the underside of both the heel and toebox. The transition from contact to take off is particularly smooth because of the consistent grid pattern of the grip as well as Saucony’s well-known EVERUN cushioning system. EVERUN is Saucony’s cushioning system that aims at maximizing energy return. If you’re a heel striker, you will likely appreciate the taller heel stack and extra cushioning.
