What’s the worst gift you can get for a runner?

Before shopping for a gift for that special runner in your life, re-consider searching for these items

There’s no worse feeling than seeing a loved one feign joy after opening a gift purchased and sought out by you. No one wants their gift to tank over the holidays and yet, most have had the experience of feeling that they’ve found just the perfect item only to have it cast away by the receiver. (Ouch!) Of course, any gift given during the holiday season should be received graciously but to avoid wasting your precious time and dollars, it could be wise to steer clear of the below list when shopping for that runner in your family.

1. Race entry

While the race entry may seem like a great idea at the time, there’s a chance this registration won’t end up being used. This runner might have specific races they’re already training for this year and your race idea could conflict. There’s a chance this person isn’t even into the racing scene or they’re banking on a break in 2018.

2. Shoes

The pair you snagged may seem eye-catching and on-trend. Upon exchanging with this Secret Santa though, you may find that style is of zero concern to this otherwise trendy runner because he/she has already found the high-cushioned model that works best.

3. Split shorts

Unless you know this person really well, maybe don’t get them a pair of teeny weeny short shorts as a gift this year.

4. Fuel belt

Your middle name may be practical and even though a fuel belt may seem like the most helpful accessory, that’s not the case for everyone. Some runners may feel bogged down by this one so make sure first that they actually run with one.

5. Pricey outerwear

If something goes wrong here, you’re out a great deal of cash. Athletic outerwear doesn’t exactly come cheap and there are many reasons why this precious runner may be a bit picky about the season’s vests and jackets. For one, that cozy, lined windbreaker might just be too bulky for the run. Or maybe the vest without reflective strips isn’t safe for the night-time runner.

6. GPS watch

Don’t purchase this running item unless you know it’s for sure the one that he or she wants. Chances are your runner friend already has a watch. If not, we can almost guarantee that they have their eye on one.

And the safest bets are…

1. Socks

Yes, it’s a cliche but to be serious, runners need several pairs and if they run frequently, they’re going through many pairs a year.

2. Base layer

Even if this person doesn’t like the colour or print, it doesn’t matter since it’s going under the layers. Runners need a steady rotation of many base layers to see them through the winter. This one won’t go to waste.

3. Gift card

Who doesn’t like receiving a gift card with their name on it? Giving someone the gift of a shopping spree is the way to go. Many avoid this option for its seeming lack of creativity but if you want to ensure your gift will be used, you can’t go wrong with a card for their favourite store.
