The forecast had called for snow, subzero temperatures and howling winds

At one point leading up to this past weekend’s races in the GTA, the forecast called for snow, below zero temperatures and howling winds.

Fortunately, that turned out to be mostly wrong and instead, participants in the Goodlife Fitness Toronto Marathon races were treated to great racing on Sunday.

Despite a cool 6 degrees and with occasional winds from the north, conditions were entirely dry and even featured a guest appearance from the sun.

Some six thousand-plus participants lined up to run the Goodlife Toronto Marathon, Marathon Relay, Half, 10K and 5K yesterday.  AIn addition to scenic city views, both events feature point-to-point courses that include a generous section of downhill and are known for being fast.

The men’s marathon was won by Peter Kemboi of Etobicoke in a time of 2:41:06. Jeremy Walsh of Waterdown (2:42:00) and Klaus Mannweiler of Wolfratshausen, Germany (2:42:23) rounded out the top 3. In the women’s race, Michelle Spencer of Guelph was first to finish in a time of 3:00:30. Jane Weber of Toronto (3:02:54) and Neela D’Souza of Pickering (3:04:47) were second and third respectively.

The ever-popular half marathon was won by Kenyan Rogers Rutto in a time of 1:07:50. Sarah Elliott of Toronto was the women’s winner in 1:20:17.

In only its second year, the 10K race featured some 1,000 runners and walkers. It was won by Kyle Smith of Scarborough in 33:03 and Amy Harkness of Dwight in 38:23. Daniello Tetangco of Toronto and Jesica White of Arva were the top finishers in the 5K in 16:38 and 18:33, respectively.

One of the selling features of the event is definitely the finisher’s medal, which some say is as big as a dinner plate!
