Fred Flintstone spotted banditting Monterey Bay Half-Marathon
A strong contingent of Canadian women were in California for the Monterey Bay Half-Marathon, which featured a surprise guest mid-race

Canadian women dotted the top of the results page at the Monterey Half-Marathon, after a brief appearance from Fred Flintstone. Yes, Fred was on course cheering on runners, and even sprinted – not for long –
alongside the lead pack at one point. Yabba-dabba-doo.
California’s Monterey Bay Half-Marathon is an out-and-back course along the Pacific Ocean and rugged coast line which starts and finishes in downtown Monterey. The Big Sur area is well-noted for its coast line and road races, also the site of the Big Sur International Marathon.

Canadians finished 2-4-7 including Olympian and Canadian 10,000m record holder Natasha Wodak (1:13:19), Kinsey Gomez (1:13:30) and 2017 IAAF World Championships qualifier Rachel Cliff (1:14:25). B.C. resident Sarah Inglis (1:13:36), who runs for Scotland and raced for Trinity Western in the U Sports system in recent years, was fifth overall. Inglis won the 2017 Under Armour Eastside 10K.
The standard to be eligible to represent Canada at the 2018 IAAF World Half-Marathon Championships in Valencia, Spain is 1:16:00. Wodak currently has the top qualifying time, 1:12:58, from the Vancouver Half-Marathon.

Near Pt. Pinos, the northernmost point on the course, which runners pass twice, a man in a Flintstone costume decided to try to hang with the lead women. Wearing sandals, he sprinted – a reminder that the top women averaged approximately 3:27 per K – for, at most, 50m, according to Heather McWhirter who was on-site. Multiple photographers, including McWhirter, were able to capture the sequence.
