VIDEO: Thrilling finish at U.S. 20K Championships

One of the closest finishes of a road race you will see as two Olympians for the United States battle to the line

Galen Rupp

The men’s winner of the United States (USATF) 20K Championships was decided in a photo finish on Monday morning.

In a thrilling duel between 2016 Olympic bronze medallist Galen Rupp and Leonard Korir, the two finished a split-second apart, clocking 59:04 and 59:05, respectively, at the New Haven Road Race in the coastal city of the same name in Connecticut. Rupp had not raced since the USATF (USA Track & Field) Outdoor Championships in June following his second-place finish at the 2017 Boston Marathon.

Rupp had a narrow advantage on Korir in the closing stages of the race before Korir closed the gap and nearly edged an easing Rupp at the line. Korir, an Olympian, settled for second after winning the 20K national championships in 2016.

In the women’s race, Jordan Hasay, a member of the Nike Oregon Project like Rupp, was the clear winner with more than a minute on second-place’s Aliphine Tuliamuk. Hasay, who ran the fastest marathon debut ever by an American at the Boston Marathon, ran 1:06:35 on Labour Day morning.
