Canadians remember Terry Fox with annual run

The most iconic of all Canadian runners was remembered on Sunday as part of the Terry Fox Run.

The annual fundraiser which raises money and awareness for the Terry Fox Foundation was held in more than 9,000 communities across the country. The non-competitive run first began in 1981 and commemorates Fox, who attempted to run across the country, a journey named the Marathon of Hope.

“For an incredible, inspiring and beautiful Terry Fox Run Day…thank you,” the Terry Fox Foundation said on Instagram on Sunday night. “All the inspiration you’ll ever need,” Olympian Dylan Wykes tweeted.

Fox was born on July 28, 1958 and passed away on June 28, 1981 at the age of 22. He lost his right leg due to osteosarcoma and ran with a prosthetic leg for the entirety of the Marathon of Hope. Fox made it to the outskirts of Thunder Bay, Ont. after beginning near St. John’s, N.L., a distance of 5,373K over 143 days. He hoped to raise $1 from each of Canada’s 24 million people at the time.

The runner is often considered one of the greatest Canadians of all-time and the Terry Fox Run has grown to global participation. To date, the Terry Fox Foundation has raised more than $700 million for cancer research.
