Top Canadian results from the 2018 Pan American Cross-Country Championships

A crop of the country’s top cross-country runners raced in El Salvador on Saturday.

The 2018 Pan American Cross-Country Championships hosted teams from Canada, Brazil, the United States, Mexico and Peru among other nations. Canadians qualified for the national team based on their performance at the 2017 Canadian Cross-Country Championships in late-November in Kingston, Ont.

The Canadian junior women dominated. Brogan MacDougall, the 2017 national U20 champion, won the 6K in 20:36, 18 seconds clear of teammate Laura Dickinson. It was a Canadian 1-2-3 sweep as Martha MacDonald collected individual bronze helping the squad win team gold.

Victoria Coates and Yves Sikubwabo were the top finishers in the senior ranks, finishing fifth and eighth overall, respectively. In the junior men’s race, Tyler Dozzi and Thomas Nobbs went 2-3 to capture individual silver and bronze. Andrew Alexander was fourth in a solid 2-3-4 finish.

As a team, Canada won senior women’s silver (gold among NACAC countries), senior men’s bronze (silver among NACAC countries), junior men’s gold and junior women’s gold, according to tweets from Athletics Canada.

Canada went with the lesser-seen white singlets, seen at the 2016 Rio Olympics among the marathoners, in the sweltering heat of El Salvador, the smallest and most densely-population country in Central America. The venue was in La Libertad, outside of the San Salvador area.
