98-year-old George Etzweiler of State College, Pennsylvania participated in Saturday’s Northeast Delta Dental Mount Washington Road Race in Gorham, New Hampshire for the 13th time.

Runner’s World reported the story of the retired engineering professor’s accomplishment, cheered on by spectators thrilled to see him at it for yet another year.
Described as “one big hill,” the race is a gruelling climb up Mount Washington, the highest peak in the northeastern U.S., involving an ascent of 1,417m over a distance of 7.6 miles (12.16K). Just over 1,000 people finished the race this year.
The winning time, by Caesare Maestri, 24, of Borgo Lares, Italy, was one hour and 53 seconds. The top female, Kim Dobson, 34, of Eagle, Colorado, finished in 1:11:42.

Shelley Doucet of Quispamsis, New Brunswick, was third female to cross the finish line and 21st overall, in a time of 1:16:29. (Doucet’s time was seven seconds faster than her time last year, which gave her a third-place podium finish.) Francois Leger Dionne of Montreal finished in 19th place.
Etzweiler’s time was 4:04:48, one minute faster than the time he recorded last year. He wore bib #9099.
Official timing ended at 3:05, but the race makes an exception for Etzweiler.
