Canadian Aaron Brown posted the second-fastest time in the men’s 200m heats at the IAAF World Championships. However, he was later disqualified because of a lane violation, according to Athletics Canada.

As can be seen in the below video, Brown steps on the inside line of his lane at the start of the straightaway and end of the curve. According to CBC Sports, Athletics Canada filed a protest but it was denied. According to the IAAF rule book, stepping on the outside line of a lane is not grounds for disqualification. However, stepping on the inside line on a curve is what the IAAF calls a “material advantage.”

Having originally posted a seasonal best of 20.08, the 25-year-old from Toronto was in line to advance to the men’s 200m semifinals at London 2017 as he crossed the line in first. Brown, the only Canadian in the event as Andre De Grasse withdrew from the championships last week because of a hamstring injury, has a lifetime best of 20.00.

With Brown’s DQ, the big names advancing in the men’s 200m include Wayde Van Niekerk, the 400m world record holder, and Yohan Blake. Usain Bolt is not contesting the men’s 200m at London 2017 despite being the world record holder in the event, a scorching 19.19.

Clarence Munyai of South Africa was too disqualified in heat 7 of the men’s 200m heats, the first of three rounds in the sprint event. Watch all the action from London here.
