It was an extremely close race on Friday night at the Canadian World Trials, but Aaron Brown successfully defended his 2018 title over 100 metres.

Brown was well in the lead but Andre De Grasse came up on him with 30 metres to go. The winner wasn’t announced until several minutes after the race as it came down to a photo finish. It was ultimately Brown with the win and auto-qual for Worlds in 10.02.

Brown now also has the fastest season’s best of any Canadian in the 100m, running a 9.96s in the heats.

De Grasse had a disappointing summer on the track in 2018, dealing with a hamstring injury that forced him to pull up in the 200m semi-final at the Canadian championships and call his season early. He also was unable to compete at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The sprinter’s difficult 2018 season followed his withdrawal from the 2017 World Championships. While De Grasse isn’t the 2019 national champion, he’s still had a great season and will likely be named to the World Championship team.

Brown will defend his 200m title on Sunday. Full results can be found here.
