American Desiree Linden wins Boston marathon

Linden became first American woman to win Boston since 1985

Desiree Linden has won a decisive victory at the 122nd running of the Boston Marathon. American Sara Sellers was second.

Linden became the first American woman since 1985 to win the prestigious marathon. She came close back in 2011, being out-kicked in the final stretch of the race, and missing the win by just two seconds.

Canada’s Krista DuChene was third, delivering one of the best performances by a Canadian in over 30 years.

In a battle against the elements as much as the other competitors, the American slowly reeled in Gladys Chesir of Kenya and Mamita Daska of Ethiopia. Daska took a decisive lead early in the race, and held up to a 27-second lead at one point.

With three strong American contenders in the race (Shalane Flanagan and Molly Huddle, besides Linden) after Jordan Hasay’s withdrawal late Sunday, speculation was high that an American might win.
