Black Lives Matter protest to take place during Twin Cities Marathon

Twin_Cities

A Black Lives Matter protest will take place during the Twin Cities Marathon in Minneapolis on Oct. 4 to bring attention to recent excessively forceful arrests in the area.

These plans for the rally were announced to organizers of the marathon, which takes place in St. Paul, over the weekend and the event has since been dubbed “Black Marathon.”

The organization of the rally comes on the heels of the recent arrest of 15-year-old Tyree Tucker and his mother Edna Waddle. St. Paul’s police arrested the teen recently at a church picnic and allegedly used excessive force in doing so. The city’s police department is said to be reviewing the case.

The Tucker arrest is not an isolated incident though. Police are being accused of being forceful in the arrest of Marcus Abrams, 17, late last month as well, and Black Lives Matter is demanding a better explanation for the death of 30-year-old Philip Quinn. Quinn was shot dead by St. Paul police on Sept. 24.

“Black Marathon will disrupt, Black Marathon will bring awareness, Black Marathon will bring us closer to ending white supremacy and the institutions that enable it,” said the group in a recent statement.

The rally starts at 10:00 a.m. in Boyd Park. The marathon is going to be updating participants on news as it happens.
