Bonikowsky beat Lewis, who was the 2018 champion. The runner is coached by Olympic bronze medallist and former Canadian 1,500m record holder Lynn Kanuka. Bonikowsky said that they race went out slow but that she’s really happy with the result.

The course is traditional cross-country, with hay bales and muddy terrain. The runners who competed in the B.C. High School Championships had a competitive advantage as their high school meet was held on the same course as nationals.

In the U18 men’s race, Javieer Tiwana, who won the B.C. high school championships, took another title. Tiwana waited patiently in about fifth place for the majority of the race, making his move with 1,200m to go. Christian Rachner took the race out hard and Tiwana hoped he could reel him in. “I’ve never raced him before so I was hoping he would come back. I was trying to stay composed.” Up next for the runners is some much deserved downtime.
