This year’s Boston Marathon champion, Evans Chebet, has won Sunday’s extraordinary TCS New York City Marathon in 2:08:41. Chebet ran a patient, well-considered race, staying with the chase pack for the first 24 km, when he threw in a surge indicating he was going for the win. Ethiopia’s Shura Kitata, who had not podiumed since his win at the 2020 London Marathon, finished second, in 2:08:54, and Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands, the Olympic silver medallist, finished third, in 2:10:31.

It was a dramatic race, due to Brazil’s Daniel Do Nascimento taking a strong lead from the start and holding a two-minute lead until 28 km in, when he ducked into a porta potty for an 18-second pit stop. Just a few minutes after his bathroom break on Sunday, Do Nascimento collapsed onto the road, unable to continue, and Chebet took over the lead. (It was a warm, humid day in New York, with temperatures in the low 20s Celsius. Several hours later, it was reported on Twitter that Do Nascimento had recovered, and did not require a hospital visit.)

The Brazilian famously fist-bumped Eliud Kipchoge during last year’s Olympic marathon in Sapporo, eventually dropping out in considerable distress; earlier this year, at the Seoul Marathon in South Korea, he set a national and area record for South America with a 2:04:51. He was eighth at the world championships in Eugene, Ore.

This was Chebet’s NYC debut; he is the seventh fastest men’s marathoner of all time and had the fastest personal best time going into the race (2:03:00 from the 2020 Valencia Marathon).

Last year’s champion, Albert Korir, finished seventh, in 2:13:27.

Scott Fauble was the first American to cross the finish line today; Fauble finished ninth, in 2:13:35. Fellow American Reed Fischer was 10th, in 2:15:23. 2016 Olympic bronze medallist Galen Rupp, who was racing New York for the first time, dropped out sometime after 35 km.
