Boston weather: pray it doesn’t rain on Monday

Five days out, it's looking like a cool and possibly wet Boston for the marathon this year

Boston Marathon

According to the National Weather Service, right now in Boston it is partly cloudy and 8 C at Logan International Airport. There is a slight chance of rain, with humidity sitting at a reasonably comfortable 63 per cent and winds blowing out of the southeast at 27 Km/hr (making it feel more like 2 C). A little breezy, perhaps, and a bit on the cool side for some, but otherwise perfect weather for a marathon.

There are five days to go before the big day. And as we all know, anything can happen in five days.

Here’s what’s supposed to happen, according to the N.W.S.:

“Scattered sprinkles” may fall over the next few hours. Winds will die down a bit. It may “sprinkle” again Thursday afternoon. It will go up to 13 C. It will become cloudy (then only partly cloudy), with a slight chance of rain remaining through the evening, and windy, with strong gusts.

Friday will be warmer, partly sunny with a high of 18. Winds light. (A little warm, but not too warm.)

Saturday could see showers developing in the late afternoon, with the temperature dropping to 15. We like this trend. But showers are likely Saturday night, and the thermometer will fall to 2 C. Yikes.

(In a section of the website called “Area Forecast Discussion,” here’s how the insiders are talking about the weekend weather:

“A strong backdoor cold front will cross the region sometime on Saturday. Unseasonably chilly weather anticipated Saturday night and Sunday, with scattered showers before widespread rain likely impacts our region sometime Sunday night into Monday.”)

So you’ll probably deal with some rain on your way to the expo on Sunday, but it’s a good excuse to stick around the Seaport World Trade Centre and visit all your favourite exhibitors. (Or, if it’s your first time, take in the feeling of excitement in the room, and treat yourself to some Boston marathon swag.) Just don’t overdo it–you’ll want to save some time to put your feet up later (so you can start worrying in earnest about Monday). Temperature: 5 C.

It will almost certainly rain Sunday night, and the temperature will drop to 3–4 C.

Folks, Monday’s forecast is calling for RAIN, with fog patches, and a high of 13 C.

But wait! Remember what we said earlier? This could all change. So don’t start panicking. (Yet.)

We’ll keep you updated. In the meantime, forewarned is forearmed.
