It was a gorgeous morning for runners in Edmonton as they were met with sunny skies and warm conditions for the marathon. Race organizers estimated the turnout to be around 4,500 runners for all the Edmonton marathon weekend events. The race offers a 5K, 10K, half-marathon and marathon with all races taking place on Sunday beginning at 6 a.m. local time.

Lunty, who earlier this year won the Banff marathon in an almost-identical 2:35:19 turned 38 on Sunday. Winning one of the province’s largest marathons is a pretty good way to kick off one’s birthday celebrations.

Ninety per cent of runners were from Alberta across all the races. There were also runners from the United States, including the second-place finisher in the half-marathon and from across Canada including some top-three finishers from Ontario.

Dawn Ladds-Bond of Calgary made it a marathon-winners sweep for the Alberta contingent. She ran 3:10:32 as the first woman to cross the line on Sunday morning.
