Martin was just eight years old in 2013 when he was killed by one of the bombs that were detonated near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Martin would have been 18 this year. Since then, Henry’s parents have created the Martin Richard Foundation, which invests in community programs that broaden horizons for young people and encourage them to celebrate diversity and engage in positive civic action.
The Foundation fielded teams to run the marathon for seven years, with more than 1,000 runners participating during that time to raise funds for the organization. Although the team’s final marathon season was in 2020, Henry wore a Team MR8 singlet, and had the names of his brother and sister written on his arms. His sister, Jane Richard, lost her left leg in the attack.
As Henry made his way down Boylston, he paused at the bombing memorial before continuing to the end, where his parents and sister waited to embrace him after he crossed the finish line.
