Canada is officially the best hammer-throwing nation in the world. Camryn Rogers won Canada’s second gold medal in the hammer throw at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with a throw of 76.97 metres.
Rogers trailed Annette Nneka Echikunwoke of Team USA, who had a throw of 75.48 metres, for most of the competition. However, her big throw on her fifth attempt put her in the lead with one throw to come. In a post-event interview, Rogers said she trained for moments like this in training. “My coach had me practice all sorts of high-stakes scenarios in training, and I feel I did my job out there today.”

Before the Paris Olympic Games, Canada did not have an Olympic medal in the hammer throw event. Now, they will be leaving the Games with two golds. Rogers is the first Canadian woman to win a gold medal in a field event since the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam.
Rogers says she is inspired by other Canadian throwers like Ethan Katzberg and her teammate Rowan Hamilton. “To see Ethan win gold, and Rowan make an Olympic final, it just shows how much the Canadian throwing community has grown in the last 10 years,” says Rogers.

Both Ethan Katzberg and Camryn Rogers now share the title of Olympic and world champion, showcasing Canada’s power as a hammer-throwing nation.
