Sunday, Nov. 6. was a special day in the nation’s capital as the Canada Army Run returned for the first time in three years. For 15 years, runners from across Canada have come together at the Army Run in support of the Canadian Armed Forces community and their families.

Canada Army Run is about Canadians and the Canadian Armed Forces joining together in the spirit of friendship and community. It is a chance for the troops to extend military pride to Canadians and thank them for their ongoing support. The run also serves as an opportunity for Canadians to express their appreciation to the men and women who serve them at home and abroad.

Canada’s Governor General, Mary Simon, gave opening remarks before the run kicked off. More than 10,000 runners participated in the in-person and virtual event, which hosted a 5K, 10K and 5K/10K challenge.

“Whether you run the 5K or the 10K—or are simply here to cheer on family and neighbours—We thank you for your generosity, for coming out and for showing what a community can do when people are united in kindness,” the Governor General said.

The run had been scheduled for Sept. 18, but was postponed following the death of Queen Elizabeth.

This year, the Canada Army Run recognized and celebrate the achievements of 100 participants with visible and non-visible conditions or injuries, who demonstrate the true meaning of “soldiering on”. All participants in this category were recognized prior to the mass start.

Many runners wore a poppy to remember, honour and show support to everyone who has served.

The race began on Ottawa’s Laurier Ave. in front of City Hall, and wound its way downtown, passing through Remembrance Row, which pays tribute to fallen Canadian soldiers. Both the 5K and 10K races ended at the War Memorial on Wellington Street.
