It was a great week of performances at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Nairobi, Ken., which ended in two bronze medals for Team Canada.

Savannah Sutherland won bronze in the women’s 400m hurdles, in a personal best time of 57.27 seconds. This was her first international competition, in which she set two personal bests on her way to the bronze medal.

Canada won another bronze in the women’s pole vault competition as Heather Abadie, of Port Elgin, Ont., jumped 4.05 metres to reach the podium.

Canadian middle-distance runner Abdullahi Hassan finished seventh in the men’s 800m event in 1:50.07, while Dylan Uhrich finished 12th in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase.

Canada had six athletes finish within the top eight at these World Championships. “Overall, I’m very proud of how Team Canada performed, said head coach Jason Reindl in an Athletics Canada press release. “The logistics, competition itself and COVID protocols were something we knew were going to be quite difficult.”

It is important to note that the U.S., Australia, Germany and Great Britain chose not to participate in the World Championships due to COVID-19.
