For the first time in its seven-year history, Spartan’s North American Championship will be held outside of the United States. This summer, athletes will compete at Big White Mountain in Kelowna, B.C., for the chance to win a share in the $62,000 prize money.

First post-lockdown Spartan event held in Florida

The men and women will be racing in the sport’s signature event, The Spartan Beast, which features 30 obstacles over 21Km. Athletes must finish in the top 10 of an elite heat in any Spartan event in North America between Oct. 2, 2021, and Aug. 21, 2022 in order to qualify for the elite division at the championships, set to take place on Aug. 27. Age group competitors must also finish in the top 10 of an age group heat during the same timeframe.

The North American Championship is part of the Kelowna Spartan race weekend, which also features a Spartan Ultra (50K course with 60 obstacles), Spartan Super (10K course with 25 obstacles) and kids races (1–3K plus obstacles).

Virtual Spartan races sound really hard

“We are excited to finally bring the championships to Canada,” said Joe De Sena, founder and CEO of Spartan. “We’re putting together an epic course that will push our athletes to their limits. The terrain is no joke. But Spartans are used to a challenge — the question is, who wants it most?”
