In less than two weeks, the Canadian 5K Championships returns for the first time in four years from Moncton, N.B. On Sunday, Sept. 11, 70 of Canada’s fastest 5K runners head to the east coast to battle for the national 5K title on an out-and-back course on Assomption Blvd., which runs along the scenic riverfront in downtown Moncton.

One of the major storylines heading into the championships is if Ben Flanagan can break the Canadian 5K record of 13:35 (set by Charles Philibert-Thiboutot). Earlier this summer, the 27-year-old road specialist broke the long-standing Canadian 10K record at the B.A.A. 10K in Boston (28:11). Flanagan has a personal best of 13:20 over 5,000m on the track but hasn’t raced a 5K on the roads since 2019.

Flanagan won the previous Canadian 5K title in 2018 when he set the Canadian soil record of 13:56 at the Yorkville 5K in Toronto. He will look to be back atop the podium in Moncton but will be up against two Canadian Olympians Luc Bruchet and John Gay.

The Canadian women’s 5K record of 15:16, set by late Émilie Mondor in 2004, still stands to this day. The only woman in the elite field with a 5,000m PB faster than the current Canadian record is Julie-Anne Staehli, who returns to the road racing scene after spending most of the 2022 season dealing with an injury.

Olympic steeplechasers Regan Yee, Alycia Butterworth and Erin Teschuk also headline the women’s elite list, all looking to win their first Canadian 5K title.
