The YMCA of Central East Ontario – Peterborough Half Marathon, ‘Half a Half’ (10.55K), 5K Walk/Run and Kids 1K Fun Run will celebrate the 38th annual running of the event in 2016. Race day is Sunday, February 28th.
The half-marathon course provides a challenge to both the serious and casual runner and features a scenic and occasionally hilly out-and-back style route that tours Little Lake, up and over the Liftlocks and out along the Otonabee River. It is considered an ideal tune-up race for those running the Boston Marathon in April. The new ‘Half a Half’ race is also out-and-back but features fewer hills and can almost guarantee a new personal best at the unique 10.55K distance. There is also a 5K walk/run and a kids 1K fun run.
Participants are invited to keep warm inside the local YMCA both before and after the race. There, all race day amenities including registration, kit pick-up, bag check, change and shower facilities and post-race food/refreshments are provided. There is also a short awards ceremony where top age-groupers and overall winners are presented with generous prizing including new shoes from local sponsor AccuPed Family Orthodics.
To date, the event has raised close to $900,000, an average of some $25,000 per year in support of the YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign. The YMCA’s annual campaign is focused on raising much needed financial support for deserving children, teens and families who are unable to afford the full cost of participation in a YMCA program activity.
