RaceGuide’s events of the week: July 25-26

With a few exceptions, the slow summer race season continues and the number of large events is still lacking. This week we turn our attention to the Atlantic provinces for two truly unique and historic events out on the east coast.

Tely 10Sunday July 26th: Tely 10 Mile Road Race, St. John’s, N.L.

Certified, Popular, Historic, Destination Race, Bucket List Event

Profile: The Telegram 10 Mile Road Race, the TELY 10, was first run in 1922 – making it Canada’s fourth oldest event – and has become the province´s largest and most popular road race, now attracting more than 4,000 participants. The point-to-point and net downhill course starts near Octagon Pond in the small town of Paradise and proceeds east through Mount Pearl and onwards to the eventual finish in Bannerman Park in the heart of downtown St. John’s. Shuttle buses to the start are offered for a small fee and all participants enjoy generous pre- and post-race amenities, refreshments and entertainment to complement what is sure to be a unique and memorable experience.

Nova Scotia Marathon Barrington PassageSunday July 26th: Nova Scotia Marathon, Barrington Passage, N.S.

Certified, Boston Qualifier, Historic

Profile: Barrington Passage, located on the southern tip of the province, is the lobster capital of Canada and also plays host to the Nova Scotia Marathon, a historical event that is now in its 45th year. The certified and Boston qualifier course features rolling hills on country roads and is run as two large loops in a figure eight configuration which starts and finishes at the local arena/recreation centre. Participants enjoy a well-marked and marshalled course (that is not entirely closed to traffic), stocked aid stations and at the finish: “Fish chowder and seafood chowder will be served, with pies for dessert.”
