Top Canadian results from the 2017 Chicago Marathon

Eric Bang and Brittany Moran take more than four minutes off their respective personal bests to lead the Canadian contingent at the 2017 Chicago Marathon

Brittany Moran

Among the 44,000 runners at the 2017 Chicago Marathon, the most starters in event history, were hundreds, if not in the thousands, of Canadians.

The fifth of the calendar year’s Abbott World Marathon Majors went off in the Windy City on Sunday morning with rather-ideal conditions around the start time including temperatures around 13 C and winds around 10 km/h from the south. The women’s race produced the sixth-fastest women’s marathon of all-time, 2:18:31, thanks to Ethiopian Tirunesh Dibaba, while American Galen Rupp won the men’s race in 2:09:20.

Not far behind the Canadians trickled in, some producing massive lifetime bests. Among them were the top Canadian finishers in Eric Bang and Brittany Moran, both placing in the top-30 led by Moran’s 23nd-place finish among women. Both set PBs, clocking 2:23:54 and 2:41:58, respectively, and hail from Toronto. (Plus, both got a pre-race photo together. Coincidence?)

According to All Athletics, Bang improved his time from 2:28:30 while Moran’s previous best was 2:47:23. (Note that results include only runners that listed their citizenship as Canadian.) Bang shared before the race that his goal was to break 2:25, which he did quite handily.

Bang ran 1:11:41 through 21.1K while Moran was on sub-2:40 pace splitting 1:18:47.

Of particular note was Paula Wiltse’s 2:58:52, which betters the Canadian W50 marathon record by almost one minute. She won the women’s 50-54 age category with the sub-three-hour performance.
