Hutchinson, Hufsmith earn their first international medals at FISU
The Canadian update after five days of competition

Canadian middle distance runner Nicole Hutchinson is taking home her first medal from an international games. The 5,000m runner got herself a silver medal for her 15:48.06 in Naples, Italy on Friday evening at the World University Games (FISU). Jessica May Judd of Great Britain took the win in 15:45.82 and Julia Van Velthoven of the Netherlands was third in 15:51.75.

In the women’s 1,500m, Courtney Hufsmith had a breakout performance, finishing third in a personal best of 4:11.81. She was followed closely by fellow Canadian Lucia Stafford who finished fifth in 4:12.70. Lucia is the younger sister of now four-time Canadian record holder Gabriela DeBues-Stafford who set her most recent Canadian record just yesterday in the Brave Like Gabe Mile. Saturday was Hufsmith’s first international games medal as well.

In the women’s 10,000m, Branna MacDougall and Laura Dickinson ran the first final of the meet on Tuesday and finished fourth (34:09.81) and fifth (34:17.95) respectively. Branna’s younger sister Brogan broke a 34-year-old record on Sunday evening at the London Distance Series Finale, running a 9:08.25 3,000m to take the Canadian U20 record.
