Wolf Trail: Gatineau Park, Quebec

Rife with wildlife, marshes, streams, and scenic vistas, Gatineau Park’s Wolf Trail is a relaxing retreat

Running through the many trails of Gatineau Park, it’s easy to see why some of Canada’s most influential people chose to vacation here – William Lyon Mackenzie King’s summer estate is a heritage site located in the heart of the park. Gatineau Park, located less than 10K north of downtown Ottawa, is a haven for active people in the region. Filled with an intricate trail system hosting a wide range of activities, Wolf Trail is just one of Gatineau’s many unique gems.

The beginning of Wolf Trail is near Meech Lake – known for the controversial set of constitutional amendments that failed to pass in 1987 – the sole reminder that the park is still within proximity of Canada’s capital. Surrounded in all directions by hills, the lake, along with the rest of the park, is the product of a retreating continental glacier that covered the region some 15,000 years ago. Starting at the edge of Meech’s waters, Wolf Trail is an 8.3K loop that climbs its way up the Eardley Escarpment. Overlooking the Ottawa Valley, the escarpment offers panoramic views of the Gatineau Hills, the Ottawa River, and a patchwork of farmer’s fields and forests below.

In the lead-up to the escarpment, several beaver dams and marshes are reminders of the rich wildlife that exist in the park. Deer, moose, black bear, coyotes, wolves, and possibly cougars call the area home. Due to the dry microclimate created by the escarpment, Eardley also plays host to a wealth of rare vegetation, including approximately 100 endangered plants. The views and unique plant life make for a great reward upon completing the climb.

The path’s terrain varies from dirt, wood chip, crushed gravel, and stone. Throughout the trail, streams and small waterfalls intersect, running adjacent to the wooded path. The undulating route makes for a very challenging run. You should have experience in hill running before tackling the trail, as some short climbs feature grades upwards of 20 degrees. With plenty of tree roots and loose rocks on the path, both the climb and the descent from the Eardley Escarpment require attention. Carry water and some snacks to keep energy and attention levels high.

With a vast network of trails surrounding this route, novice runners shouldn’t be intimidated by Wolf Trail‘s advanced designation. Several neighbouring trails offer less aggressive climbs and distances. The close proximity of other trails, and the myriad trails connecting along Wolf Trail also give those seeking to run longer distances numerous options.

Season:

Wolf Trail is open to runners from mid-April to late October. However, in the winter months, the trail makes for a great cross-country ski, or snowshoe adventure. On summer days, Meech Lake has several beaches open to the public, including one at the base of the trail, where a refreshing post-run dip is a must. The route is best during the Fall, as the wide range of colours make for gorgeous viewing.

How to get there:

The trailhead is located at the P13 parking lot on Chemin du Lac Meech. The National Capital Commission has built several bike paths that lead from the city into Gatineau Park, making it possible to bike from the city to the trail.  Wolf Trail is also accessible by car year round.
