On Saturday night in his hometown of Quebec City, Charles Philibert-Thiboutot ran a new Canadian 2,000m record of 4:56.88 to break the previous record by almost three seconds.

The 31-year-old middle-distance runner clocked back-to-back two-minute and 28-second kilometres on the Laval University track, which equates to a speed of 24.5 km/h.

Philibert-Thiboutot broke the previous mark of 4:59.56 held by Nathan Brannen, which was set at a York University meet in 2013. The 2,000m is five laps of the track, and is rarely run at track meets around the world.

He was paced by his training partners Thomas Fafard and Jean-Simon Desgagnés. Both Philibert-Thiboutot and Desgagnés represented Canada at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene. Philibert-Thiboutot reached the semi-finals in the 1,500m, but just missed out on a spot in the final.

This is now his second Canadian outdoor record of the season. In April at the B.A.A. 5K in Boston, he set the Canadian 5K record at 13:35.

Philibert-Thiboutot will now prepare for the 1,500m at this weekend’s NACAC Senior Championships in the Bahamas, where he hopes to bring home a medal for Canada.
