Chilly Half offers free race entry to disappointed Tokyo Marathon entrants

Some Tokyo Marathon entrants can race for free at this year's Chilly Half Marathon

Chilly Half-Marathon

The Tokyo Marathon was set for March 1, but race organizers announced yesterday that while the elite and wheelchair races will go ahead as planned, the mass participation race will be cancelled due to a confirmed case of coronavirus in Tokyo. Some of the runners affected by this cancellation will still be able to race that weekend, because the New Balance Chilly Half Marathon has offered free entry to 50 of those people who were signed up for the Tokyo Marathon.

The first 50 people to contact Kelly Arnott, the Chilly Half race director, will get to race for free in Burlington, Ont., on March 1, the same day as the Tokyo Marathon. Just prove you were registered and ready to race in Japan and voilà! A free race.

Start of the Tokyo Marathon

It will be a bit colder than the temperatures you were expecting to see in Japan (Tokyo’s forecast for March 1 is 13 C while Burlington’s is -5 C), but it isn’t called the Chilly Half for nothing. Be sure to bundle up and you’ll be fine and ready to nail your season-opener.

Even with this great deal, you’re probably still disappointed that you won’t be able to race in Tokyo, and we don’t blame you. But look at the bright side: you can use the Chilly Half as another stepping stone in the build to your 2020 marathon. So don’t get too down, grab a free entry for the Chilly Half and redesign your plan for this season.
