Nearly 10,000 runners were on the start line at Montreal’s Parc Jean-Drapeau, on the island of Sainte-Hélène, to run the half marathon and marathon, which finish in Olympic Park. It was perfect marathon weather, with temperatures reaching only 15 C and winds around 13 km/h.

Shumie broke the course record of 2:11:05 set by Ezekiel Mutai of Kenya in 2018. This was the first time Shumie has run under 2:10, earning him $11,000 for the win and course record.

Morocco’s Mousaab Hadout was the second man to cross the line, with a time of 2:17:35. Kenyan-Canadian David Mutai of Etobicoke, Ont. finished third, with a time of 2:22:21.

The women’s race came down to the final few kilometres as DesAutels battled against Andréanne Fortin of Montreal until 30 km. DesAutels pulled ahead, with Fortin finishing a minute behind in 2:54:15. Kamilla Pinter of Ottawa was third, with a time of 3:04:18.

Thousands of supporters lined the course along the esplanade to Montreal’s Olympic Stadium to cheer on all the athletes.

The men’s half marathon came down to the wire as London, Ont.’s Phil Parrot Migas took the win in 65:11, 14 seconds ahead of New Brunswick runner Mohamed Aagab (65:25). Elisa Morin of Montreal won the women’s half in 1:18:06, negative splitting the second half.
