The nominations reflect not only the remarkable performances from track and field at the Olympic Games, but also one-day meets on the World Athletics circuit and other events around the world. Missing from the list of nominees is triple Tokyo Olympic medallist Andre De Grasse, who returned to the Olympic podium in the 200m with his first gold medal.
The nominees:
- Damian Warner (CAN) – Decathlon gold medallist, setting a new Olympic record of 9,018 points. Fourth all-time in the men’s decathlon.

A three-way vote will take place to determine the five finalists. The World Athletics Council will cast their votes while fans can vote online via the World Athletics social media platforms on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Individual graphics for each nominee will be posted this week, and a ‘like’ on Facebook and Instagram or a retweet on Twitter will count as one vote.
The World Athletics Council’s vote will count for 75 per cent of the final result, while the public vote will each count for 25 per cent. The voting for this award closes at midnight on Saturday, Nov. 6. The male and female Athlete of the Year will be named in December at the World Athletics Awards.
