The world-famous DJ and producer smashed his goal of beating Oprah and now loves to run

Grammy-award-winning artist Diplo (Thomas Pentz) stuck to his promise to run a marathon after his first half-marathon last year. On Sunday, the world-famous DJ and producer finished the L.A. Marathon in three hours and 55 minutes for 2,009th out of more than 15,000 runners.

Instead of hitting the club to celebrate his finish this time, the 44-year-old DJ was seen cooking up a post-race cigarette while wearing recovery boots on his Instagram story.

Diplo got into the sport on a dare. At first, he had his suspicions about running, but now, we are pretty sure he genuinely loves it. He said his goal going into the L.A. Marathon was to beat Oprah Winfrey’s benchmark of 4:29 from the 1994 Marine Corps Marathon. “All that matters is that I can beat Oprah,” wrote Diplo on Instagram. “She was pretty fast.”

This time around, Diplo appears to have trained a little more, posting a few post-run pictures and videos on his social media channels. Now he can say the training paid off, setting a half marathon PB of 1:49 while on his way to a 3:55 positive split.

Last year, he finished the Miami Half Marathon in 1:50:11, with no training and after being at a Miami nightclub the night before the race.

Diplo had some company on the course: 2016 Olympian and author Alexi Pappas—who ran alongside him. Pappas gave the producer kudos in a congratulatory Instagram post, saying “We were total gazelles out there.”

Although it was probably a well-deserved celebration for Diplo, smoking after a race is counter-intuitive as there are immediate effects due to nicotine and other chemicals, which increase your heart rate, blood pressure, and mucus production.

I would love to see Diplo challenge Uncle Chen’s record of 3:28.
