Today we celebrate Earth Day. For Canadian runners, this day gives us even better reason to appreciate the natural beauty of the country where we live. Canada is home to gorgeous trails and scenery which makes others around the world envious. So on Earth Day, celebrate the land which we are spoiled to live in. Get out and run it!

Try out a new trail. There’s probably no better way for a runner to feel grateful for the earth’s beauty than to lace up the shoes and decompress on a long and scenic trail run. Whether that means running loops of the forest near your house and slowing down a little to appreciate the surroundings, or packing up the van and taking a day trip, that’s up to you.

Organize a quick litter clean-up with the crew. This doesn’t take a lot of planning at all. Send a message to your running club or call up a few of your closest running friends. Head to the park, track or trail as you normally would and tack on a small litter clean-up at the end.

Power off and run long. So you normally spend your Friday nights at home watching movies? Or maybe you enjoy blasting some music while having friends over. This Earth Day, maybe make a point of turning off all lights and powering down and going a little longer on the run.

Plan a summer trail run trip in Canadian national parks. Earth Day may have caught you off guard this year but if you didn’t end up making earth-friendly running plans, you can use the day for some long term planning instead. Sit down and consider planning a summer trail run trip to one of Canada’s many parks. You live here– might as well take advantage of the natural environment that this country has to offer.

Recycle. Give gear a new life by donating old shoes and apparel. One of the best ways of recycling is passing along old objects to give them an extra life. For runners, that means shoes, jackets, technical tops or just ill-fitting gear that has rarely been worn.
