Canada has sent a very strong team to the university games, with several athletes in medal contention. In the women’s 800m, both Jenna Westaway and Maïté Bouchard have some of the strongest personal bests in the field. Westaway broke Melissa Bishop’s Canadian indoor 800m record this winter, becoming the first Canadian woman to ever run under 2:00.00 indoors.

The women’s 400m contingent is also very strong, with Maddy Price and Zoe Sherar both coming off impressive international performances. Both women have already represented Canada this year at the World Relay Championships in Japan. There, Sherar helped the mixed 4x400m team to a silver medal.

On the men’s side, Canada is sending a very impressive steeplechase duo of Jean-Simon Desgagnés and Ryan Smeeton. Smeeton has had a breakout 2019 season, obliterating his personal best and running World Championship standard at Payton Jordan in May. He then went on to finish second in the NCAA steeplechase final.
