The southeastern British Columbia event is an all-trail race run along Elk River in the heart of Fernie, which is known as a ski town in the winter months. The course crosses the foot of Mount Fernie and is well-marked for those looking for time or others taking part in their first organized race.

According to the race website, 375 people took part in the Fernie half-marathon, officially known as the Oktoberfest Fernie half-marathon, and the two other distances last weekend. The race, held in the town of approximately 5,000 residents, also includes a three-person relay and a standalone 10K.

The mountainous region provides an ideal backdrop for runners in the summer and fall months and offers challenging terrain. The town is located approximately 1,000m above sea level.

The early-bird price of the race is just $30. For post-race festivities, the event has a beer tent– fitting considering the Oktoberfest theme– near the finish line for those who run or walk the relay, half-marathon or 10K. The scenic views, trail footing and close-knit community vibe of the event is apparent in the photo gallery and is a great option for those looking for a destination race in 2017.

Runners from Alberta, British Columbia and Montana made the trip to Fernie or raced locally on Sunday. Fernie is a three-hour drive from Calgary, a two-hour drive from Lethbridge, Alta. and a one-hour from Cranbrook, B.C. Results can be found here.
