Bear briefly interrupts road race darting across the course
A bear crossed the race course during this Colorado Springs, Colo.-based 10-miler surprising many of the oncoming participants
A bear crossing provided runners a mid-race adrenaline rush in Colorado over the weekend.
At the Garden of the Gods 10-Mile (16K) Run on Sunday, a bear ran across the road in front of a large pack of oncoming runners. The bear was spotted at approximately the halfway point of the Colorado Springs event. One runner, in a white top, immediately stopped mid-stride after spotting the animal. Others got their phones ready to snap a quick photo.

Donald Sanborn, who took this story’s featured photos of the bear mid-race, wrote on Facebook “Why did the bear cross the road? To scare the runners and make me lose precious time in the middle of a race!”
“Sanborn says the animal seemed to be trying to decide whether to zip across the road filled with runners when a large enough gap finally emerged for the bear to get through,” writes the Gazette.
The course runs through Garden of the Gods Park, which lies between Manitou Springs and Colorado Springs.
Other examples of mid-race appearances by animals include goats and sheep at the Wings for Life World Run, a deer during a cross-county race, and a family of bears passing through the run leg of a triathlon, to name a few.
